I'm still not quite sure what to do with our swallows that are invading the ship again this year. They can be really nasty when you have 20 – 30 of them with those mud nests, because wherever there's a nest, right below it is a mound of bird poop that just continues to grow in a pyramid pile. Anyway, we have two cats for the mice population and they tend to do great for the vermin but can't quite get up on the overhead and rafters where the sparrows nest.

Our civilian workforce, Rex Flowers and Barry Turner worked hard yesterday to remove two old watertight doorframes from the crew's head and forward berthing. The old frames are bolted onto the bulkheads and are difficult to remove. We actually had to grind quite a few of the bolt heads off to remove them.Someone asked me the other day why we were still cleaning up and removing things off the ship because they thought we had it fairly clean. Well, we actually have it pretty clean but everything that gets removed from a leftover civilian installation, leaves a lot of debris that must be removed by hand, taken off the ship and disposed of. That usually requires burning of the debris, so we're going to be in a cleanup mode off and on for sometime to come.

Our little barn swallows are committed to making their nests inside the boiler flats and reel well again this year but we're going to continue trying to deter them from that exercise. They do have a tendency to fly right at you in the first early walk around of the 4 to 8 with my flashlight. Last year we didn't have electricity onboard and that really created havoc with them flying towards the flashlight. Not certain if they're the same swallows from Capistrano but I wish they'd go back. You might want to know where we have our office started temporarily with our computers set-up. We chose the area that would have been the original quarterdeck (when I was on the old girl) but has since been enclosed, during the updates of the late 60's early 70's and became an extension of the radio shack.

Haven't decided what to do about the barn swallows that love to nest on the ship but I think we'll try and deter them from that messy exercise this year. We probably had 50 nests in the old girl last year and maybe twice that amount when I first got here in September '05. If we can get rid of the nests before they lay their eggs well be OK.

Yesterday was filled with work as we (two civilian volunteers Barry Turner and Rex Flowers) removed a fair amount of debris off the ship from civilian installations in forward berthing, the mess decks area and the galley. Quite interesting; when we got to some wallboard in the mess decks that we removed, directly behind that on the original ships bulkhead, there was a note written on the wall from four guys in 1964 (May-June) that had installed some paneling and they apparently covered the note up with the paneling. Needless to say, we won't remove that wonderful piece of history from the old girl and we'll just place a wooden frame around it so everyone can see it in the future.

Our shore power crashed early this morning (0230) and we blew the main circuits. I'm not quite certain what caused it but we were back on-line by around 0315. We had some additional work to do getting the Lucid's gangway straightened back on the dock because it's been out of whack (crooked) for a week or so. There's some work needed on the stern ''Spud'' that goes through the port rudder bushing to secure the ship.

We've managed to keep certain compartments very dry and our office has been established in the radio shack area. We have two computers, an all-in-one color printer-scanner and have just established internet service after being off-line since I left Texas, 17 months ago.

Full shore power this morning and all our lights are working. We pumped the bilges several days ago and have been allowing the water to settle (drain down) to the lowest point in the ship, which is the bulkhead separating the forward and aft engine room. We also have to pump aft because the limber chains don't work. It's our second pumping this winter and we'll most likely have two more before the rainy season stops.

We started a new program today to keep the Lucid discussion group advised of the daily condition of the ship and the work being accomplished during the week. Visit the Yahoo! Discussion link on the right pane. This is a continuation update of our progress reports here on the website, along with accompanying photos taken from those daily logs.
